GFR 27 Years Later

27 years ago, (not exactly) I went to my friend Steve’s place on the campus of Ohio State University, just off High Street if I remember. If it is still there, I could probably find the place if I needed too. I was at OSU to see Grand Funk Railroad. It was their first reunion tour after being broken up for a number of years.

We were stoke, previously we had played in a small band together and GFR was defiantly on our play list. At least two of our band mates, Doug and Deven were along as well (cant remember if Larry was there of not). The show rocked, literally!IT is interesting to note that if I remember correctly, That was the only show of that reunion tour. I guess old issues flared up and they parted ways again after giving it another go around.

I have always wished I could remember more of the actual show, I tend to remember events on the perifrial of that night. I’ll keep it to myself as to why. But fast forward to today. At a small little town festival not far from here the Pompano Seafood Festival tonight’s headline act if GFR. I cant tell you how much I have been looking forward to this over the past couple of weeks. I know only two of the original band members are still in the group, I know that these guy are closing in on 60 years old … I don’t care. Its still great music and after 27 years, I am going to remember it this time.

Hoping to have plenty of pics from the day to add to the flickr account, including one of me wearing the “40 Years of Funk” concert tee. I may have to figure out a way to change it to 27 years.

  1. I was going to do a whole post about the show complete with pictures. I am just too disappointed to relive it again even through posting. Maybe I set my expectations too high, but the whole crowd around me was walking out by mid show.

I may go into details once I recover from the disappointment. Its taken me almost a week to write this.
