Three Lane Highway
June 27th 2006 @ 2:21 pm Personal

Since Deven’s arrival in our little circle of blogs, old memories are rising to the surface. A particular discussion on DQ (DragonQuest for the uninitiated) over on Steve’s blog is quite refreshing. But our old “garage band” “Four Lane Highway” was mentioned as well and it gave me pause to think.

The band was a 5 man country rock band, Deven did Lead Vocals, Doug and Larry traded back and forth between Lead and rhythm guitar, Steve played bass and I was the drummer. We had a blast, we played any place we could find an empty electrical outlet. I remember being cramped in a shed at the end of Steve’s driveway to having an entire warehouse (Stone Straw for the old time Waverlyittes) to ourselves. Sometimes we would start playing as soon as Doug or Deven got off work at McDonalds in the evening, and keep going until the next morning when I had to go work the breakfast shift at the very same McDonalds.

I am trying to remember some of the music we used to play..

Many many Eagles tunes
Grand Funk Railroad
Pure Prairie League
Lynyrd Skynyrd
(Need some help here guys …)

Now what I was thinking about was, what music would we be playing today if we were still going strong. I know since we have been living very far from each other, our tastes have changed some what, so since there are three of us posting here now, what would you like to see on the play list. When I say “you” I do mean everyone, what should a small time band from southern Ohio be playing these days?

Here’s my new list …

Many many Eagles tunes
Grand Funk Railroad
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Rush
Molly Hatchet …

I think we had it mostly right to begin with … :)

I’d definitely try to shove more “newgrass” into the mix … take some bluegrass standards and rock them up a bit, or take some rock stuff and render it in a more acoustic fashion.

Newgrass Revival, an awesome band from the ’70s and ’80s, did a lot of this kind thing. The members of that band have spread out now and each uts his own spin on the idea: The Sam Bush Band, John Cowan Band, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Others do this as well: Chris Thile and Nickel Creek, Mike Marshall, on and on.

If we were playing today, I’d try to get us going on a slow power rock version of “The Long Black Veil.” And I’d push us to take Eagles favorites like “Seven Bridges Road” and “Twenty-One” (we never played the latter, but I wish we had) and turn them into real jams.

I’d also really, really, really push us to play some Beatles. Those are just plain great songs, and we could do almost anything with them (limited, of course, only by our oh-so-limited talents).

    Fun post, John. Thanks!

We also did a few tunes by Four Lane Highway… “Tecumseh” was a great tune that we didn’t get to play as much as I would like to have. “Ides of March” saved my sanity, although all those other people stuck in bumper to bumper traffic on I-55 heading into Chicago on any given morning may have thought that the guy singing it at the top of his lungs was NUTS.

We did perform some ur-Hatchet (or was that retro-Hatchet?) Danny Joe Brown’s “Edge of Sundown” is still a favorite of mine to this day. And we performed it so well that when I think of it, I hear our version, not Danny’s.

I seem to recall a band called McGuffey Lane.

“People like you, make life nice
    for people like me.”

Y’all forgot REO Speedwagon. I think that’s what you were playing the first time I saw the band.

I’m disappointed you all wouldn’t be playing the Goo Goo Dolls or Jet if you were still at it. (I don’t think Deven likes either one, just tolerates it when I play them.) Or I’d like to hear some blues. Muddy Waters, BB King, Albert King. . . . Come on, guys, break away from the 8 -track mindset!

Hmmm…I’d like to see a reunion concert, you know, seeing how I was never given the chance to see you guys play in the first place. And in this reunion show, tunes I would like to hear include…

    Dreams I’ll Never See: Hatchett
I Know A Little/ Call Me The Breeze/ Crossroads: Skynyrd Medley
    Big Balls: ACDC
    Freewill: Rush
    Roundabout: Yes
    Mr. Jones: Counting Crows
Acoustic Rendition of Hotel California: Eagles (Hell Freezes Over)

And finally an encore featuring Hatchett’s Flirtin with Disaster.

And who knows maybe my band, Life’s Translation can be the opener!

    hehe.

Andy: If we do a reunion show, the warmup gig is yours. But we’ll need a few years of rehearsal if we’re going to play “Freewill.”

Doris: I’d be all over some blues. I love that stuff, and the more acoustic, the better. But I don’t recall us ever playing any REO Speedwagon. I could be wrong, though.

Deven: “Edge of Sundown!” Cool song, still love it. I wouldn’t mind adding the Outlaws “Hurry Sundown” to our list. I think we tried it once, but got away from it for some reason.

I remember “Tecumseh,” and of course the “Ides of March.” We also did originals called “Four Lane Highway,” “Country Life for Me” (although I thought we had a cooler title), “Six More Miles to Detroit,” “Rollin’ With the Wind” and others. Great times, no matter how much we sucked! Oh, yeah, and “Party!” (I can still do the funky bass line.)

I can’t remember all of the REO song, but Deven started singing “I’m gonna keep on lovin’ you cause it’s the only thing I wanna do.”

I’ve always loved the blues sound. Wish we’d made it to some of the blues clubs in Chicago. Or the festival - imagine BBQ ribs in one hand, a microbrewery special brew in the other hand, and BB King in your ears!

Andy: For RUSH, I think that Steve is right. We’d need a long time to practice. I honestly don’t think I could wrap my vocal cords around “Freewill”, and it would sound like crap in a falseto. My voice range has faded a little over the years. I am not sure I could ever match Geddy Lee’s range. I did sing along with the car radio a few months back when “Red Barchetta” was playing. I think I hit all the notes, but couldn’t talk for a half an hour afterword :)

Steve: I know we practiced REO’s “Keep on Loving You” in the Stone Straw factory–not sure we ever played it in public. I am fairly sure we also attempted “Ridin’ the Storm Out”.
If we did “Hurry Sundown” we’d have to do “Green Grass and High Tides”, also. I always loved when we played “Freebird” because it gave me a chance to just listen to Doug and Larry jamming and swaping the lead part. I always thought that if I could get good enough to carry the rhythm guitar that our sound would improve with both of them doing the dueling leads in true Outlaw and Skynyrd fashion. It aches my heart when I remeber how tight our sound became just before life realities pulled us in five different directions.

Doris: That’s it! I say we put “Go to the Chicago Blues-fest” on the list of “Things to do with spare grocery budget money, once the boys move out.”

So Steve’s band played an REO Speedwagon song, huh? I think he at one point claimed to have never even heard of that band — nor any other act I remember from the ’80s.

Thanks for sharing that little tidbit, Doris!

I don’t recall the REO Speedwagon thing at all, but if Deven says we tried it I believe him. It is possible that I’m just repressing the memory …

I don’t recall claiming to have never heard of REO Speedwagon. I do recall saying many times that I don’t particularly like REO Speedwagon.

Steve: How did I know you were going to want NewGrass… hehe Im all for it, I get to sit back and listen.. :)

Deven: So funny. I was just listening to Danny Joe Browns CD last night and I had to hit the replay button and listen to “Edge of Sundown” again… Love that song. “Tecumseh” would have been our breakout song on the first album for sure. “Tecumseh …. Allot of men fought him, Allot of men died”. John Swabb was performing in Key West west a month ago, I am currently on the McGuffy Lane mailing list and get to see where they are performing knowing its to far for me to get to. It’s just comforting to know they are still playing. :)

Doris: Yes we did do that song I think we even tried “Riding the Storm Out” as well and we even went as far as doing some Tommy Tutone and Rick Springfield. Don’t deny it guys, you know we did. I did make it to one of the Blues clubs when I was in Chicago … many years ago, the festival sounds much better… :)

Andy: I dont think we could have you as a warm up band … Your guitar player and possibly your drummer would show steal the show. I do like your play list though.

Tod: I think the reunion (2nd one at that) would have to be in a vaction spot. We would fare much better if the audience was loaded.

Gere: Dont let him fool you .. he loves REO, he tries to hide his passion for 80’s GlamRock but we know it’s there. Has he ever shown you has personaly autographed copy of Steve Perry’s Solo Album… hehe .. :) (jk) .. BTW, I love Blogs too.

WHASSUUUUUUUUUUP? WHASSUUUUUUUUUUP? My mind may be broken, but I’m still alive and kickin’! Guys, we had SUMFUN back in the day, didn’t we? THREE LANE … er, LOIS LANE HIGHWAY!!!! Waitaminnit… that wasn’t it… uhhh… OH! I remember now! UNDERGROUND RAILROAD!!! Steve Goble, Greg Current, Rick Brite&ball, Roger Harbert, Mark Goble, John Carcutt, Scott Hatcher (Steve, did I forget anybody?) - we had more drummers than Spinal Tap! Yeah, we was tight - I’d forget the chords (as usual), so I’d look over to see what Larry was playing, and he’d be tuning his guitar in the middle of the song! Anybody remember the time we were jamming at Stones Straw and we were set up like we were facing an audience and we were jamming along and suddenly - no drumming. Mark fell asleep in the middle of a song! He had his drum stool leaned up against a pallet of straw cartons. How about the time we were recording on our state of the art $10 Panasonic tape recorder, and we were recording Six More Miles To Detroit, and near the end of the song Roger hit a cymbal and it flew off the stand and bounced across the floor IN TIME WITH THE MUSIC! We decided that was a keeper! I still had that tape up until the last time we all went down the New River, after which I lent the tape to Clark so he could make a copy. Boy, I sure hope he’s still got that tape! It’d make a good white noise to scare the mice out of my garage! How about our INFAMOUS show at the 1982 WHS yearbook rally? WE BLEW THOSE PIKETON GUYS AWAY!!!! Even tho (as usual) I forgot the lead to our opening number! Or maybe I was just nervous to be playing infront of ~ 500 kids, former teachers, SCURV!, Mrs, Roberts, etc, not to mention the fact that our girlfriends (Lesia, Doris, and Denise) were front row center! How’d they DO that? AND HOW THE HECK did a PIKETON HIGH SCHOOL band get in on a WAVERLY yearbook rally? Oh, yeah - we were all supposed to play at the Vocational school that same day, which somehow got cancelled. Thanks, John, for getting us the yearbook gig! It was a blast! Hey! Is this what ya call a run-on paragraph? OK, I’ll start a new one!

Ah, the memories! If I could just remember some of them! I ain’t senile - I just choose to forget! Hey! At least I’ve still retained more hair than memories… altho Lesia and the boys might laugh at that statement! C’mon, Doris - we weren’t part of the 8-track generation! I clearly remember that even tho many of my friends had 8-tracks in THEIR cars, I never did! So there! We’re not THAT old! Hey - don’t knock packing 5 or 6 (or more) guys in a rusty 1966 Dodge Dart and listening to CCR on your buddy’s 8-track while you cruzed down River Road getting an occasional whiff of ol’ Big Muddy stinkin’ polluted Scioto River on your way to Nowhere to do Nothing! Ah, the memories! Or packing six guys in your 1972 Dodge Monaco (a good car to drive in a funeral) and then rolling your car into the ditch (or ravine, what’s the diff?) cause you’re trying to get away from Deputy Larry Travis (of whom you used to sit next to on the bus when you went to Beaver) because somebody was hanging out the window yelling silly stuff at Skinny McKinney’s house (for the 2nd time that night on the way back from Nowhere) while the deputy was in the driveway. And Lord as my witness, we were NOT drinking! Ah, the memories! I had the first UNDERDASH CASSETTE DECK (no radio) in my ‘hood (he stated proudly)! Seriously, it was a nice Alpine stereo which I proceeded to hook up to a pair of $29 flea market special TRIAXIAL speakers all self installed in my custom pinstriped 1973 Plymouth Duster Ditch Cleaner (hence, the pinstripes)! That thing gotta HEMI in it, you ask? YES, IT DID!!! All the more power to propel you down the App, at ~ 100 MPH right before you hit the week old dead bloated stinkin’ dog in the middle of the road which proceeded to explode underneath your car as your undercarriage drug it along at that 100 MPH on your way to the drive-in to meet some chicks. Boy, wuz we kewl back then!!! Oh, wait a minnit. That was Seth’s car we were in and it was only 90 MPH. Now THAT guy knew the chicks! Hell, he probably fingered more pussy than he did guitar strings. Ah, the memories! I’m probably recollektin the time I went on a date with my girlfriend Maryanne (or Mary Anne. or Marianne. or - Heck, she didn’t even know how to spell her own name…) and we had been cruising out around Buchanon listening to the Outlaws and some song called “Party” by some group I forget which she actually LIKED, this after she said she was spending the night with a friend and really was going out with me cause she was to young to date (14. Hey, I was only 18! Waitaminnit - that didn’t come out right…). And even tho we had a beer or two (or three), and had put that funky smell into de air, we were in my Plymouth Ditch Cleaner, I was driving (ominous foreboding here…..) when she asked in her demure way if she could drive. “I’m an excellent driver!” She submitted as she offered as proof her testimony of how her boyfriend used to let her drive his car on the backroads around Dayton. “I’m an excellent driver!” She repeated. If visions of “Rain Man” aren’t coming to mind yet, allow me to suggest them now. Of course, she DID sneak out to go on a forbidden date with me - it was the least I could do! So, I pulled over, she clambered over my lap as I slid underneath her on the bench seat, and I willingly instructed her on what to do, even tho in truth, she didn’t need it. Down the road we went, down 772 towards Lake White on a rainy, dark, Friday night in March, heading for that stretch of road where the lake is only about 12 inches from the edge of the road (JAWS music here). Marianne (Maryanne - whatever) was actually doing just fine until we came to the first curve where the Lake comes up to the edge of the road. Traffic was not light. There was a car behind us, and a car coming at us with their high beams on. Mary Ann paniced and declared she didn’t think she could make the turn, as it was wet and visibility was poor, and that curve was dangerous in the daytime with nobody else on the road, and I told her just to slow down, relax and go around the curve slowly as if no one else was on the road. Just look at the road in front of you, and keep it between the lines. Well, the good news is she had the wherewithall to not hit an oncoming vehicle, nor did she put it in the Lake. She did, however, take out two mailboxes which were actually mounted on the guardrail, as she added more custom pinstriping to my rod. “Ohmygod! I’m so sorry!” She exclaimed, then asked what she should do now. “Just keep driving!” I instructed as there was no place to pull over anyway, hoping to God it wasn’t Deputy Travis behind us. Never did find out who was behind us, we pulled over on St. Mary’s Lane, Dad never asked about the pinstripes, and she never asked to drive my car again. Coulda been worse. Really, Mary Ann was a really nice girl who had some major family problems and was having trouble dealing with it all. I never held that against her, because it was my fault for letting her drive in the first place. Ah, the memories.
L.A. City! That was the “cool name” Steve was thinking about! We played that as our encore # at the yearbook rally. Didja all know that Pure Prairie League is back with Waverly original Craig Fuller! They’ve got a brand-spankin’ new CD out called “All In Good Time” and it is among the top ten most requested on XM Radio. Folks, I kid you not, this could be their finest album since Bustin’ Out. You be the judge. www.pureprairieleague.com. Mark Farner has a new CD out of all brand new material, “For The People”. It just started shipping this week. I haven’t even got it yet. It’s all GFR style rock, he’s putting it out on his own site (www.markfarner.com, natch) and in case you haven’t heard, Don pulled a Terry Knight and convinced Mel to join him in voting Mark out of Grand Funk Railroad. “Nobody wants to hear any new music!” Is what Brewer proclaimed. Well, I’m sick and tired of hearing WAAB for the 12 millionth time, including the times we played it as one of our IMHO signature songs. I waited 25 years for a new PPL album, and it delivers. I’ve heard Mark’s does the same. Ah, the memories.
John, I hope you’re going to see Superman Returns in 3D at an IMAX theatre!!! I don’t want to hear about the movie, or read any reviews, or anything until I take the boys to the IMAX 3d theatre at Easton one day very soon! 20 minutes of this movie has been shot in IMAX 3d! Some movies ya just gotta see on the BIG screen. It’s the first live action hollwood movie to be filmed in IMAX 3d.
Steve, old buddy, I owe you an apology. When Peggy passed away, I felt bad for you and Mark and Clark and especially your Dad, but I didn’t feel bad for your Mom because I knew she was going to a better place. And I was HONORED to be a pallbearer. I just didn’t know how bad it could be until it happened to me. When Mom passed away, it hit like a ton of bricks. I couldn’t think straight. I was the first one at the hospital when I got a call from the hospital telling us that Mom wasn’t doing good and maybe we should come. I found her room, but I thought I had the wrong room because the woman in the bed did not look like Mom. I didn’t recognise her. So I went to the desk and they took me to that same room. She was already gone. Man, I was messed up. Thank God Jeff had his wits about him, as he took care of the funeral arrangements, while I babbled like an idiot and tried to put up an emminence front like I was OK. I think Dad was worse than me and don’t even ask about Sis. On the way to the viewing, I remember thinking “Oh, man I gotta call Steve”, and somehow called Mark instead. That’s all I remember from the drive to the viewing. I remember sucking it up in public and breaking down when alone. And telling the boys that Grandma wasn’t dead, she’s going to go see and be with her mom and dad. Apart from that, it’s all pretty much a blur. Any way, it has bothered me very much ever since that somehow I f’d up and didn’t call. So here, now, for everyone to see, I apologize and hope you’ll forgive me for f’ng up.
Deven, we live about 10-15 miles apart and somehow we never get together. I’ve thought about up and knocking on your door someday, and even actually tried it once a couple of years ago, but couldn’t figure out where the heck you live. Somewhere out airport road is what I’ve heard. I actually thought about just knocking on every door up and down the road, except I know that not everybody welcomes strangers approaching their house especially if they’ve got a meth lab or an indoor dope forest in their basement if you catch my drift. You’re on the road that spawned Double Barrel Darrell, I’m from Pike County, and I’ve SEEN exactly what I’m talking about and if you’re not on the welcome list, you could get your head blown off and they’ll find your body and your car somewhere in KY next month. You just never know what you’ll run into when you knock on a stranger’s door in Pike County.
And Oh, by the way, last time I talked to Larry, he’s still jamming and would love to get together and RECORD a CD!! Now all I gotta do is go buy a guitar. I gave mine to Jeff about 10 years ago. Haven’t played since. I spend all my spare time at baseball games, and football games, and basketball games, and trying to keep my 5 vehicles running. I’ve replaced clutches, swapped out transmissions, I’m currently repairing my son’s 97 Eclipse after it thru a rod. Next up - my 3 cylinder 94 metro (up to 50 MPG) just burnt a valve meaning I just dropped from ~ 52 HP to maybe 30 something ponies. Most people just junk ‘em when this happens. Not me! I paid a healthy $349 for that car, and now by golly, I’ll either fix it, or do an engine swap, dadgummit!
Hey, Darren! Your Mom still have that tape of unreleased Craig Fuller tunes? How much you want for a copy? Just say the word!
Well, that was short, but sweet! I started ~ 11 pm, and it’s now 3:43 am. Woulda been quicker if I hadn’t oopsied and deleted the entire thing about halfway thru. Heck, i’ve spent more time on the computer tonight than i’ve spent probably the entire past week. I try to check my email often enough so that they don’t disable it due to inactivity, altho that has happened a couple of times. Just not into computers. Deven and John and even possibly Steve just fell off their chairs. WHAT?!?! Not into computers?!?!? Are you a communist?!?!?! Sorry, folks, I can’t find the time to do what I need to do , let alone what I want to do. I gave up music, i gave up golf, I gave up drawing, but it’s worth it cause I got something better in return, my family. I don’t want to be grandpa age before I find time for my family. So that time is now, and will always be as long as my boys need their dad. I just wish I had more time for them. Ah, the memories…
www.dougsagraves@hotmail.com , that’s me! I’d love to get back into playing some music, or at least I do catch an occasional concert. Last week I went to see Ricky Scaggs and Kentucky Thunder, with Rhonda Vincent and the Rage! Lesia detests that “hick” music, but I love it. I reeeaaly went to see Rhonda, man, wow! Goosebumps! Did anybody here see PPL when they played back-to-back shows in Chilli last fall? It was stuff of legend! George Ed Powell, and John David Call joined the band both nights on every song. The Friday night show was marred with sound problems, but the Saturday night show was so frickin’ excellent that they added a LIVE track from that show to the already in the can new CD! So now I can say I am on a PPL album. In the audience, yelling my head off! And they were joined on stage Sat night by ORIGINAL original members such as Tom McGrail who of course wrote Pickin’ To Beat The Devil, and BTW, came up with the name Pure Prairie League. John Caughlan - drummer on their first album, and a host of others. The whole shebang was put together by - here’s a name from the past - anyone remember Paul Pollard? I talked to Paul last week and he said PPL may be back in Chilli this fall for another benefit concert.
PPL will be in Cleveland on 08/13/06 - Cleveland Heights, OH Cain Park w/Poco, NRPS, Chris Hillman. Mark Farner is in MANSFIELD Saturday, Jul 15th, 2006 Venue: Rock-N-Ribs - North Central State College Campus , and in Toledo the night before. Just a heads-up for anybody interested.
Well, gotta go! C-ya, B kewl, and God Bless!

Sorry guy’s I have really tried to change him. I also think he gave way too much info on Seth………Some things are to be left in the past!

Well I will have to say some very interesting reading so far. I will have to say the days of old were a blast. Like Doug talks about in his writing I haven’t had much time for the things I enjoyed in the past like playing music. Done a little playing in church over the years but that has been about the extent of it. I have read some interesting talk of a reunion tour not sure I would call it a tour lol. Not sure we ever toured in the first place. I think we jammed more then anything else. I also need to comment about the REO thing I don’t remember playing any REO. You guys must have played it during my absence well ok I am getting older and the memory is fading maybe that is the problem. I remember learning Riding the Storm Out, Keep Pushin and the other song which eludes me at the moment, later in my short and non famous career lol. Wow what we might be playing now tat could be very interesting. Myself me taste hasn’t changed a whole lot I really like a wide range of stuff. I like a lot of the modern rock like 3 Doors Down, Evenescence and Creed. I still like Lynyrd Skynyrd stuff and the new Vanzant is pretty good. There is some good young country artist out there as well. Sugarland, Racal Flatts and Brad Paisley to name a few. There are several Christian artist I really like as well like Casting Crowns, Instereo, Third Day and Jeremy Camp. Ok to let you guys know I have taken up the mandolin this year as well. I am not very good at it but have enjoyed picking it. I have also been playing my guitar more lately. I have a very talented 17 year old daughter who has a love for music who has a great singing voice and a lot of musical talent. So we have been playing some together around the house. She is self teaching herself to play piano and doing a great job so far.

Ok back to the reunion show, Steve you are right we would need a lot of rehearsal time and still not sure how much that would help lol however, it is a great thought. Reading all the comments has brought back many memories. I will say we had some great times. I still have the desire to put some of our stuff on cds but like many of my project I need to make the time for it. I know I have shared that idea with a couple of you over the years and I haven’t given up on the idea. So share your thoughts about making a cd. Well it is late and I need to go to bed like Doug I stated this late and it is now after 1:30 am and I have church in the morning. You guys will have to bare with me I have messed with blogging a little over on yahoo but I am still really new at it. Would like to stay in touch better if could. Take care guys hope to hear from you all and God Bless.

None of you wants to remember playing REO! LOL I don’t remember it getting played more than that one time. Denise took me along while she took photos. I think all 5 of you were there.

Listen to The Goo Goo Dolls “Think About Me”on “Gutterflower”. It sounds like something you all would have liked way back when. After I persuaded Deven to listen to that song, he actually gave The Goo Go Dolls a try. I bought him some McGuffey Lane CDs as a reward. :)

Doris: I STILL don’t remember playing REO. We might have tried it once, maybe, but I really don’t remember it being part of the repertoire.

DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOG!: Man, good to see you on here! For a guy who isn;t into computers, you sure catch the bug in a hurry. That was the longest blog post I’ve ever encountered …

I was thinking about you the other night. There’s a publisher working on an anthology of superhero stories — not comic books, per se, but short stories about superheroes. Anyway, he’s looking for artists to illustrate the stories he accepts for the antho. I don’t know if he’s paying up front, or paying based on sales, or what — but I do know who is the best super hero illustrator I’ve ever rolled over in a Dodge Moneco with. I saw the plea for interested artists and immediately thought of you. If you are interested, go to www.sfreader.com, click on the discussion forum and find a thread on Pitch-Black Books “Call for Submissions.”

All this discussion, and now you and Larry on the blogs, too … man, it makes me want to suck down a few Little Kings and start singing … “Well I was born a poor man, down by the riverside, learned to spin a fortune wheel, and roll dice …”

Larry: I have a couple of mandolins, and I can play a few really simple tunes. My listening has mostly gone to bluegrass and folk music, but I still listen to Skynyrd and recently added some Molly Hatchet to my iPod. I can still handle the bass work on all the stuff we used to play, and I think my singing is actually a lot better than it used to be. Of course, I still can’t f-ing play the bass and sing at the same time, unless the bass line is really, really, really retardedly simple!

    Doris: I wouldn’t know a Goo-Goo Doll from Goo-goo Gai Pan …

Doog: I believe you managed to name every drummer we ever had … and unlike Spinal Tap, ours didn’t explode!

BTW: “This is Spinal Tap!” is a hilarious movie. You guys should see it if you haven’t!

Okay, we’ll drop the REO issue. But I might keep bugging you about The Goo Goo Dolls. Steve, just imagine what your daughter will be listening to in 10 years . You should hear some of the stuff our boys play. One group sounds like monks in a mosh pit.

Haven’t we taken over John’s blog?

Steve: I have an amp that “goes to 11″ reference in the character I tossed together for John’s ‘Reality TV for Geeks’ topic. Have you seen the sequel to “This is Spinal Tap”? It is not quite as funny but “The Return of Spinal Tap” is fun as well. It was an MTV special put together for the band’s 1992 “Break like the Wind” mock-tour.

Larry, It is good to see you posting here!

Now if we could just get John to return to his own blog….

Well it good to see my post finally made it lol. It has been good to get back in touch with everyone. I will have to thank Doug he gave me a call Sat morning and he shared with me all this and of course being the curious person I am I checked it out. I am not the most computer savvy person but I do spend a lot of time on them.

I will say reading all this stuff has taken me back down memory lane ok what I can still remember age has caught up to me and my memory isn’t what it once was. Doris you could be right we might have tried to hack up REO like we did all the other groups lol.

One thing I will have to say I seem to stay up on some of the new modern music but that comes with having teenagers still at home. Now I will have to say there is a lot of things they like I am not to crazy about but I still listen to it and review it objectively. There have been several times I was surprised that I liked some of what they have shared with me. I haven’t listen to any of the Goo-Goo Dolls but I will have to say my curiosity is peaked so I just might check them out I am always up to new music. Of course I still like the old stuff we listen too and tried to play. I had forgotten we attempted the Edge of Sundown that was a song I really liked. I need to try to down load it and see if I still remember it lol.

Steve you are lucky you can sing that is still something that I cant do lol. My playing skills are a little better but like you even if I could sing I still can’t play any thing complex and sing at the same time. So I guess it is a good thing I can’t sing lol.

Even though I don’t play much anymore I do stay up with it thanks to a daughter who is into music. The girl has all the talent I wished I had. She can read and play music plus play by ear as well. I am not trying to brag on her but she is one them people who has that special gift and she doesn’t even realize it. Like I said earlier she is teaching her self to play piano. The pianist at church one day after church showed her a couple of chord and that was all she needed by the middle of that week she was playing and singing an Instero song and the next weekend she sang and played it in church. There are still things she needs to pick up and work on but basic chording she can so and can sing while she does it. That so much a head of me like I said I still can’t sing and play. This has all taken place in a few short months. It is amazing the gifts that some have and they don’t even realize it she is truly blessed. Ok proud papa should probably move on lol.

Steve as for the mandolin thing it is still a work in progress. I don’t know that much a few chords and scales. The one song my daughter has learned on the piano I can play with her on mandolin that is pretty cool. Of course I have to play the cheater chord can’t play the real ones but it sound ok lol. I only have the one mandolin. It is a cheep one I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on it until I knew whether I would like playing it. It sounds and plays ok.

Just came to my remembrance we also played a couple song by Marshal Tucker. Plus there hasn’t been anything mentioned about the original material we had a couple of tunes I felt were really good. When I pick up the guitar I still play LA City. Cindy and Four Lane Highway get some time on the guitar as well. I even played the famous trilogy a few months back now I am wondering if that has brought back memories. I think we even tried to do a TOTO song with Roger on Trumpet. I think the song was Rosana. I think we attempted that song out at the trailer in the old kitchen. We had some great times out on Boswell Run Rd. Talking about digging deep on the memories. I remember reading about the year book assembly and that was a great time and I too want to thank John for making that happen even though my old car broke down on the way there. Lucky for me it happens right by the high school. John I still remember the times we would practice on Steve’s car port. I know we had to drive the neighbor crazy with all that noise. I also still remember practicing out at Deven house with all of us hovering around the stove to stay warm. Ok here is another one for the memories the time we play at the bluegrass/country jamboree in Lucasville. I remember hearing that they thought we were to loud go figure a rock band to loud lol. We had our own little diverse group of fans and I do want to thanks you for all you support you gave. I will have to say them were great times and I am so glad we were able to share them with each other. If any other tunes or memories come to me I will past it.

Ok seeing how we are going down memory lane and talking about the year book assembly what does everyone think about all the schools being torn down? Waverly has definitely gone through some major changes over that past few years. Not sure how many of you have seen the recent changes. It is still odd to drive up Emmitt Ave and not see the high school there. The basketball Gym and football field are still there and that is what you see from the highway a definite different look to say the least. I know change is going to happen but still it is sad to see part of so many of our lives and memories gone. I also had the opportunity go travel out on Boswell and a lot has changed there as well. The old trailer is now gone and a house sets there. Plus there many houses and trashy trailers up all over as well. Something ironic I want to share with those who will remember. I used to live next door to the trailer in a house. Now the trailer has been replaced by a house and my old house is now a trailer go figure lol. Also the field where we parked played ball between the two places has a house on it as well. It is funny how things change and I thought I would share this.

Larry: We did try “Rosana,” and I remember it distinctly because the song has a funky triplet on the high hat cymbals that I could play fairly easily, and it freaked Roger Harbert out trying to figure out how I did that. I felt good about it, because once Roger took to playing the drums he was doing stuff that blew me away in fairly short order. I have no doubt Roger has since mastered that triplet and moved on to tougher things …

I miss the old school building, but I don’t get too sentimental about such things. I miss people more than buildings, I guess.

Doris: I won’t have to wait 10 years to be driven nuts by my daughter’s music. She’s always been a fan of any song sung by a Disney princess. She has a CD full of them and a couple of singalong DVDs. She does concerts for us. We have travel DVDs that include my stuff, Gere’s stuff and princess songs. Trust me: Princess songs make me want to cough up my lungs.

But she also seems to have a thing for some of my music (she likes up-tempo banjo and mandolin, mostly) and some of her mom’s music (Gere likes progressive rock like Genesis and King Crimson and Adrien Bellew and Rush). But when she listens to the radio in her room, she gravitates toward the hardest rock she can find. Ozzy Osborne. Ted Nugent. Metallica.

Yep. I have a 5-year-old metalhead on my hands.

A metalhead. Nice. I’m corrupting - uh - expanding our goddaughter’s music listening.

That’s god - not grand - daughter for you speed readers. We’re not grandparents yet!

Her Mom plays mostly Disney and kids’ music for her, with some softer adult music thrown in. I’ve been playing Marvin Gaye, Clapton, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Muddy Waters, BB King, and more including The Goo Goo Dolls. If I could only find my zydeco gospel music . . .

One minute I’m thinking to myself, self, what would happen if I google my name, Roger Harbert? The next minute I’m in this strange but wonderful place that’s taking me WAY back memory lane…Hey guys, How the hell is everyone? John, you are THE MAN for doing this thing. So this is a blog? LOL. Wow, too much…

I really look forward to reading more and catching up with everyone. Steve, I remember us attempting Rosanna like it was yesterday. That is so funny man. You were grooving on it, and I was thinking I was somehow gonna sing that song, but secretly I just wanted know how to play that damn song! You’re too kind with your comments on my later drumming. You know what, I did finally figure out that Porcaro broken triplet feel on the hat and snare LOL To this day I still love to play that shuffle when warming up. By the way, I’ve been playing with a band in Cincinnati now for nearly 9 years. Back in the day we played tons, now it’s just two Saturdays/month. It’s a blast, and I credit all you guys for teaching me and fostering our love for music which continues to be a wonderful part of my life today. Wow, this is too cool. I hope when I hit this submit button that it opens for me a new chapter in connecting with the folks that meant so much to me as a kid back in Waverly. Take care all.

    Roger!!

Your band’s website is HILARIOUS!!! If you get up to Waverly come out and visit. “Tiny Little Lobsters” live in my swampy yard. Honest! Bring your galoshes.

BTW, the reason your first post showed up late, and why John’s blog is so quiet is because John has been busy. Something about moving from one house to another.

  37. July 30th, 2006 | 8:15 pm | #37

Hey Deven and Doris!! I thought maybe I messed up when I didn’t see my post appear the first time. I’m, well, okay, I suck at computers LOL Unlike all you guys :-) It’s so cool to hook up with you on here. I’m thinking reunion concert for your guy’s band!!

Our website is pretty dated now, but you’re right it is a trip. It was put together by our lead singer’s husband who was at the time the acoustic and rhythm guy. You guys would like him. He is one fungi. Once they had a kid he retired and was replaced with the long-haired hippie freak keyboardist.

Hey, next time in Waverly I’d like to bring our 8 year old daughter out to play with the tiny lobsters LOL
